JavaOne Developer Conference -- LG TeleCom, Korea and Sun Microsystems Tuesday announced their collaboration to develop rich interactive applications and services for LG TeleCom's ez-i CDMA handsets. LG TeleCom is one of the first service providers in the industry to launch Java technology compatible products and services for its mobile network. Powered by Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME), LG TeleCom's mobile phones will be shown this week at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco. The J2ME platform is ideal for high-volume, small-footprint consumer products such as mobile phones, pagers and personal digital assistants.

"LG TeleCom will deliver more than 20 interactive games based on Sun's Javatechnology to LG TeleCom ez-i subscribers before September 2000," said Seyoung Ro, vice president, LG TeleCom, Korea. "In order to provide more game content we have already made partnerships with several game providers in Japan, Korea, and the United States. The rich security features and dynamic download capabilities inherent in the Java platform will enable our network services to be more robust and flexible. Through the prototyping efforts, we became totally convinced that Java technology is the key to making our network more attractive to consumers and content providers."

"Sun is pleased to announce the progress we have made in our collaboration with LG TeleCom. This demonstrates our commitment to consumer markets as well as the robustness of J2ME," said Curtis Sasaki, director, Product Marketing, Sun's Consumer Technologies. "Sun expects to see a range of innovative J2ME compatible wireless services made available to ez-i users in Korea very soon."

"Connect Corporation is excited about the opportunities that the Sun and LG Telecom collaboration brings to the content community," said Tetsuya Kaku, President, Connect Corporation. "The inclusion of Java technology in the ez-i handsets will allow us to deploy our interactive games and e-commerce solutions across LG Telecom mobile's network."

Java technologies are expected to make the ez-i service even more compelling by providing enhanced security for mission critical applications such as online banking, stock trading and entertainment game services. In addition, Java technology, designed specifically for the wireless market, will allow LG TeleCom to dynamically upgrade and manage ez-i software and services.

Growing at record-breaking speed, LG TelCom ez-i service has added over 500,000 subscribers in the past four months. Plans to add commercial Java technology applications to the ez-i service infrastructure and handsets by the end of July 2000 are under development. Devices supporting J2ME will allow developers to rapidly and cost-effectively develop, deploy and enhance industry-leading e-commerce, entertainment and information services. J2ME allows wireless carriers and service providers to leverage their existing infrastructures to provide a rich variety of value-added content and services to their customer base.

LG TeleCom achieved PCS in early 1996, and has set its foot in total communication service which will provide worldwide Value Added Service and software in PCS area.
