ORANGE has launched an international Push-to-Talk service--called Talk Now--which brings a presence feature to instant voice and messaging communications. The service creates an immediate connection between two or more mobile phones so minimal time is spent searching for or dialling phone numbers.
The company says trials with IBM and the RAC have been successful, with the RAC now looking to use the service as a possible wireless Instant Messaging solution. Initially, Talk Now will only be available on the Orange Treo 600, with further handsets and rugged devices planned for later in the year.
Sol Trujillo, CEO of Orange Group, said: "Talk Now provides the business community with an immediate and reliable way to better manage teams of people within an organisation. It addresses a real need among businesses to disseminate or communicate time critical information quickly and efficiently."

voice of reason
MICHAEL Ransom, Senior Analyst at Current Analysis says: "With Orange aggressively predicting one million users within 12 months the company will need to ensure the success of the new service. The Push-To-Talk service has been successful in the US where operator Nextel is generating 20% of revenues from Push-To-Talk calls. However, penetration levels and usage of both voice and SMS vary greatly between US and European mobile operators, which casts some doubt over the potential for such services in the European market."
Ransom advises: "Potential customers of the new Talk Now service should question Orange as to the availability and pricing of handsets. With only one model currently available from Orange customers should seek reassurance that a wide variety of handsets across the price range will be made available. Customers needing a Push-To-Talk service should consider the new services when mobile operators offer them. However, whilst they are waiting, customers should purchase a cheap pair of two-way radios and see if they offer the required level of performance."
